Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI Imaging is noninvasive and painless method to learn about the anatomy of internal structures and soft tissues in great detail. Magnetic Resonance Imaging utilizes the spin differences in water molecules when they are placed across very high magnetic fields. The higher the strength of the magnet, the better the result.

MRI (MR Imaging), MRA (MR Angiography), and MRV (MR Venography):

• MRI gives detail of the soft tissues and internal organs in the body whereas MRA and MRV give details of arteries and veins (blood vessels) and their distribution and blockages, if any.

• Depending on the body part being evaluated (head, neck, thorax, abdomen, pelvis, parts of spine, specefic joints etc.), location of the imaging will vary.

• Images are formatted by a computer and 3-D information is available for review in X, Y, and Z axis to the Radiologist so that he or she can look into the body parts from different angles and provide the information to your doctor.

• Usually the time taken per procedure is 20 to 30 minutes.

MR images can help the physician to evaluate:

• Structure of internal organs.

• Soft tissue versus bone differentiation and relevance in placement.

• High water content tissues versus low water content tissues.

• High resolution images of deep structures where detail matters a lot.

MRI Patient Instructions

IMPORTANT! Please notify the scheduling desk or the technologist if you have any of the following in your body:

• Cardiac pacemaker or defibrillator

• Cochlear ear implant

• Cerebral aneurysm clip

• Metal fragments in eyes, or bullets or other metal inside tissues

• Metallic joint prosthesis

Preparation for Exam:

• Normally, no special preparation is needed for an MRI. You may eat normally and take your medication as directed by your physician.

• If you suffer from back or joint pain, you are encouraged to take your medication prior to laying down in the canner.

• Wear loose comfortable clothing without metal (e.g. zippers, buckles, snaps, or underwire bra or hooks).

• Do not wear any metal such as jewelry, watches, piercings, or hair accessories.

• You will be asked to remove your hearing aid, removable dental work, credit cards, keys, and pocket change. You will be given a safe place to store these items.

• If you have any metal in your body such as plates, screws, metallic fragments, metal picked from your eyes, or drug infusion pumps please let the technologist know.

• Ear phones or ear plugs will be provided to you to reduce MRI noise.

• For MRI contrast studies, patients 65+ years and diabetic patients will need lab work to check for renal function.
